The new MacBook Pro and the future of Mac laptops

On Thursday Apple released for sale its new line of MacBook Pro, which is a minor update to previous models that the introduction of innovative products more than you expected. Spoiled or probably anxious to see something new and unique in its kind, the list of characteristics of the new MacBooks left me with little flavor. Something completely subjective, I must clarify. Whether the ratings are good, there is much to complain ("Unless the price, perhaps?). It's just that I would have liked a redesign apparently will not see until 2012, and that the most important innovation was a scream as loudly weeks before having any official data. In any case, the question to be answered is: Why is the update was not higher?

Before starting the questions, would like to review the characteristics of the new MacBook Pro is partly because although it is very likely that anyone reading this entry has information about the product, you never know who may be aware for the first time, and secondly also because I like the idea that the blog is complete, so that anyone who requires information on the latest Apple products, you can find it here. Explanations, here we go:

As you can see, this time choose to skip the explanation and directly use the summary Apple provides. I think it's a much faster read the news and meet specifications. Especially when there's not much to say about it.

features if I should stress, are: FaceTime

HD: thanks to a camera that has "three times higher resolution than before, now you can make video calls via FaceTime at 720p. Obviously, it is a feature that is best used for calls between Macs, but it is also compatible with iPhone video calls and the latest generation iPod Touch. The really unexpected part is that FaceTime application for Mac is not free but is available on the Mac Appstore a little less than a dollar. Honestly, I understand that just are not charging a fortune, and this may be good to make the user must go to buy a Mac Appstore application is attractive as a matter of quantity of sales (not little chance that once in the Store, the user gets to see applications and ended up buying several more.) But FaceTime? Free preinstalled in the iPhone and iPod Touch 4, does not really seem an application that must be paid for, for as low as the price.

Thunderbolt: in words as textual Miguél Michán, Thunderbolt is a trading name of Peak Light technology developed by Intel and commissioning market in technical collaboration with Apple, which combines the Mini DisplayPort to connect PCI Express to offer a new set of input / output speed. It is capable of reaching speeds of 10 Gbps (1.25 GB / s) bidirectional simultaneously (ie, 10 Gbps of reading and writing at the same time), double the new USB 3.0, 12 times more than FireWire 800 and even 20 times faster than current USB 2.0.

But speed is not the only strong point of Thunderbolt, but also its versatility. The new interface is capable of transmitting audio eight channel high definition video and a huge amount of data simultaneously through a single cable. Also allows us to connect up to six devices in chain without a negative effect on performance. This means that you can connect to a compatible screen MacBook Pro, this hard drive and the other peripheral and use all the same speed as the last of which was directly connected to the laptop.

Until here, everything sounds great. In fact, there are still a few things to say (which can be read at this link ), but I think the important thing now is to point out something: there are not yet compatible devices with this technology, so that for a time not going to be much the utility can be given. Unless all Apple products are updated as of this date have a port Thunderbolt, and I mean not just the Mac but iOS teams. But honestly I see it difficult. Especially considering that Thunderbolt port technology is based on PCI Express architecture that is absent in iOS teams.

On the other hand, I think it is worth to note that the MacBook Pro now comes with the option of using the iPhone's 3G connection 4 (in case the user has one) but the site does not explain how this feature work .

They also have the option to buy the MacBook Pro 15 "and 17" with an anti-reflective panel, for those who really annoying reflections in bright light than their default MacBook.

already done a review of the characteristics presented, now if I return to the original question: Why Apple gave us a product like this?:

not think we'll see a MacBook so dark, but personally I loved the design as it is

Beyond the color that the designer gave him thinking how would a MacBook Pro made with Liquidmetal, the truth is Many expected a slimmer design style of the new Air, with all that that implies: flash storage, instant-on, battery life and mobility. However, as we know, the new MacBook Pro does not have those characteristics. Is it because they found an efficient way to carry these features to the Pro family, or is simply not that what you have planned? In his article for Applesfera , Miguel López believes that:

"What more has been heard has been, not only in the store but in the whole network, has been the fact that the display of the new MacBook Pro 13 "still retains the 1280 × 800 pixels when the screen size of the MacBook Air has 1440 × 900 pixels, and also the lack of some legacies of the ultraportable. Many are hoping for a MacBook Pro by adopting a simple philosophy, no optical drive player with an on-board SSD and boot the instantaneous rest ... if you said the new Air was the future laptops, why this new generation of MacBook Pro has not followed the steps?

[...] The reasons are easy to find: the MacBook Air is cheaper, lighter, has a display with incredible resolution, the graphics are NVIDIA and some prefer it before the Intel 3000 ... has shortcomings such as lack of Superdrive or FireWire 800, but are consequences of road that is taking Apple into the future. The slogan "The future of portable" was not random, and perhaps we're waiting for the rest of the notebook range take the form and concept of the Macbook Air when it might end up happening is that sales of the MacBook Air make it become the biggest selling laptop company.

If that happens, the MacBook Air will end up being the favorite Apple laptop despite its shortcomings. Will the new MacBook, and the current target model will no longer make sense. "

Certainly his words have much meaning. Especially if we look at how Apple manages its line of desktop Macs, while the iMac line is the one with the style and popularity, the Mac Pro are sacrificing the hype that they could pursue an attractive design to hold power and gain followers in a very specific (and small) market. It would no wonder that Apple intends to do the same with the MacBook line.

In fact, this update of the MacBook Pro took direct aim at the power of the computer. So much so that the MacBook Pro 2011 lower capacity is on par with the MacBook Pro 2010 for greater capacity, and the MacBook Pro 2011 larger capacity by 80% than the previous generation. The benchmark to prove it is:

worth noting that the testing was done with the tool Geekbench 2 , which is limited to assessing the performance of the processor and memory, so these results would be even better if the equation metiese new AMD Radeon GPUs that are three times higher than previous models. And, as noted in Applesfera , the new MacBook Pro will not only exceed their processors to previous generations, but also also outperform desktop Macs such as the iMac 27 "last year or the Mac Pro in 2008 ( and even the base model last year). The magic of SandyBridge of Intel processors is definitely impressive.

However, despite the strength shown is the line Air which has a better letter of presentation: not only was presented in a Keynote by Steve Jobs, but also the time chosen to show the progress of MacOS X Lion. Even to its section in the Apple site highlights have a different design from the rest of the MacBooks. Clearly, the idea is to make it stand out.

Perhaps the question then is: What about the MacBook "White"? To which my response would differ from that Miguel Lopez. And personally I think that either White MacBook line becomes the equivalent of the Mac Mini (keeping the current design), or inherit the design of the MacBook Air to catch up and keep on being intermediate between the Air and Pro which is likely also to be increased in size, increasing the total to 15-inch models.

I say this because if we think the Air 11-inch has the same price as the White. So if people decide they prefer to pay a thousand dollars for a smaller MacBook, less power and less capacity storage than its pair of polycarbonate, it's likely that Apple consider allowing the MacBook Air occupies the post of "cheap Notebook" and come up the ante with White line trying to keep their current specifications but in a thinner aluminum body (and bigger, for sure). Otherwise, the Cupertino would have to seek a way to lower the price of White line, which obviously would not be desired by them.

Finally, I can only say that while it is uncertain the future of the MacBook Pro, I think it is realistic to assume that the Air will have a 3G model, with Thunderbolt and a slight improvement Specifications for this year. More than anything to build on the media boom will surely reach with the launch of Mac OS X Lion. If you have not already done, can take a look at the news of the upcoming Mac OS on the official website of Apple , besides watching the video that I leave them below.

A look at
characteristics (in English)

Personally, I recommend watching the video in 1080p full screen. It's almost like watching a demo in your own pc. It would also be good to let the video carrying all before him, thing to pass quietly if they do long. Going to see that Apple's next OS comes with everything, and as I was saying, looks set to be the MacBook Air the team responsible for bringing Mac OS X Lion to the masses.
