Steve Jobs and the iPad 2: I See What You Did There

New iPad. Many will know already that this is, there Wednesday Keynote 2 and the Apple CEO took the opportunity to introduce new products and talk about the competition. And is not that well spoken, of course. Taking applause from his followers, and criticism from those advocating competition, the truth is that not many seem to understand the game of Apple tablets segment. So, leaving the review on the characteristics of new products for later, I will try to uncover what is the matter from my point of view.

For the reader who is not a staunch follower of Apple, it is likely that the rumors about to the Cupertino company and its CEO be unfamiliar. But the truth is that there are many "unconfirmed information" floating around, not to mention anything about it, Steve Jobs personally undertook to disprove those who aimed to hurt his company.

But without a doubt, the best was on the side of the criticisms: Jobs talked about the competition and had no problem making fun of the mistakes that are falling. And as you may know more than one, Steve omitted, but when he talks does not lie. Given its words and its omissions, the following are the key points of the keynote and what these mean for the future of Apple.

Steve. Vive.

There was a year in which it was rumored that Steve Jobs had died, and the first keynote in that time was headed by him as if nothing happened entering the place with a quote from Mark Twain: "Rumors of my death have been rather exaggerated. "

This year, there were rumors about the health of Apple CEO since the retirement health issues that had recently, leaving in place the interim CEO Tim Cook in charge until his return. The strongest of them all came from the National Enquirer magazine, which published a photo of Steve Jobs entering a facility with poor appearance, saying he would presumably 6 months (according to the analysis made by a specialist ... the picture!?).

Despite the concern of many for health, Steve again denied a rumor, just by getting a room and giving a lecture as usual. I admit that among all these and doubt about whether Steve Jobs would present in the Keynote or , whether the would head as usual, or if you only have a minor role, came to worry the issue. However, those who are benefiting with Apple shares fall because of these rumors, they saw These were again discredited.

2010: the year of the iPad.
Android
Many fans complain that Apple is awarded the title of "creator of the first tablet." However, it is not true. Tablet PC certainly there long ago, and Apple recognize this. What Steve Jobs says is that the iPad was the first tablet to be sold in such a large volume, whereupon it makes a difference between "tablet PC" and "modern tablet PC," since Apple pioneered the second group achieved unexpected success in sales. For this reason, is that Steve Jobs introduces the iPad 2 speaking before the first iPad: gives the message that Apple was the first company to create a versatile tablet, suitable for mass consumption, relegating the other companies to place of imitators, even when some of these (like HP) have been longer in the business of the tablet PCs that Apple herself.

What does this? Well, imitation always seem to be of lower quality than the original product, so Apple is positioned as the company that understands the tablets, and therefore, the possessor of the best product in the segment. But back to the question of whether Apple invented the first tablet or not, I think the most convenient is a step back chronologically and remember what happened with the introduction of the first iPhone.

2007, certainly had a lot smartphone around. However, Apple introduced the iPhone and revolutionized the market. Were the makers of smartphones? No. However, we can say without doubt that reinvented the concept, which is not wrong to say they were the parents of the current smartphone, no matter which manufacturer's brand or the OS, it is very likely to have a touch screen the iPhone.

is why Steve Jobs introduces the iPad as the third great success of the post-PC era: the first was the iPod, with which they entered the business of portable players, the second was the iPhone and the third the iPad. The message is clear: Apple enters a market segment and revolutionary, adds value and makes it interesting for other companies. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that 2010 was the year of the iPad. Were it not so, we would not have had a Mobile World Congres 2011 so full of tablets, when tradition had always been an event dedicated to smartphones almost exclusively. "Attack of the clones?

Applications. It's what it's all about.
During
there was laughter keynote when Steve Jobs said the huge difference between the amount of apps designed for the IPAD and currently owned by its nearest competitor, Android Honeycomb.

certainly gives me the impression that the competitors were stuck in the era of hardware, where the best team was decided by the specifications, in a comparison chart like this:

But the days are over. Today, the supremacy of a mobile device over others is determined by your OS, along with the quantity and quality of applications you have available. There is no point have a dual-core tablet if the OS is not properly optimized and if the applications are designed for the same limited quantity. The same people the Android Guys blog admitted, despite his love for the Google OS, it was a wrong move by manufacturers to launch their latest tablets. I quote verbatim:

"... sure, Android runs on a processor Tegra2, but it will not unleash its power.

It's like putting an old lady in a Ferrari average [sic]. The Ferrari (multicore processor ) has enormous potential, but the old (Android) does not know how to handle it. will be able to handle something faster (better on benchmarks) but driving a Ferrari is an art, not a trick. "

Strong words from a site by and for fans of Android (the full post this link). And certainly they are right because to launch dual-teams core with an OS that has fewer than 100 applications optimized for it, today is a bad joke. Especially when you consider that it is tablets that cost $ 800 upwards. But go into detail about this later.

aside the brilliant idea of \u200b\u200btaking the new version of an OS-only tablets with a wave of expensive equipment that support it (ergo,> 100 apps at the time of purchase), on to another situation like that of RIM and its BlackBerry Playbook. Even without taking the tablet market, RIM is trying to attract developers to its new platform, Tablet BlackBerry OS. You could say that they are well designed: they are taking the time to optimize the OS and apps to add in the App Store has something to offer when you take out the tablet on the market for mass consumption. However, it appears that the experience that developers have time to write apps for the new RIM OS is far from desirable. Jamie

Murai, a developer, decided to give it a chance to RIM and joined the ranks of programmers, especially tempted by the offer of a BlackBerry Playbook for those who enroll in its program development. But he was forced to withdraw when confronted with hundreds of problems that made the task of developing, impossible to sustain. Again I quote verbatim:

"At this point, I felt the need to compare and contrast [the RIM development tools] with the way Apple and Google do things. If you're developing for Android iOS or, you can replace a procedure of two whole paragraphs in one sentence: press the button that says Build and Run button (or the equivalent in Eclipse for Android). Sarcasm aside, as it is, the SDK is a complete waste Playbook [sic] .

So I was at this point that I decided to give up. Knowing the pleasure it is to use the tools from Apple and Google, there was no way I could justify my continued with the development Playbook. "

Much what he said in his open letter to RIM , but I think in these two paragraphs I quoted, I summarize the main idea: the development experience was so negative that it decided to give up.
things
So How is the competition catch up to Apple? might think that perhaps the intention Android is to exploit the ignorance of people who buy the gadget fashion without really understanding the question, but hardly adequate numbers close them if they take such expensive equipment. Something similar could be said of RIM, which at a price that will not just low, is to bring to market a smaller team, but at the same time with a thicker and less applications available to the iPad 2, even when it was announced months before this.

Timing. Who hits first, hits twice.

already talked about it in a previous post, so I will not dwell too much on this topic. I'll just mention that it's amazing that Steve Jobs is able to say that the iPad 2 will be the first dual-core tablet to be distributed widely. Really is a gift from competition to Apple, and is not in a position to make concessions in such a way.

Motorola Xoom
The tablet, for example, was announced in January this year, and only recently began shipping in some countries. On the other hand, the rest of the tablets still no date announced even today, as seen in the comparison chart I showed earlier. In fact, many do not even have a definite price, but is not expected to be very cheap, which brings me to the next question.

price. Less is more. Less

price, more sales, is a very simple logic. Competition, however, again point to an escalation of specifications without taking this into account. They may have assumed that the iPad 2 would add to this escalation and therefore would also increase its price. However, improvements in the new iPad aimed at maintaining a low profile, improving specifications with just enough to keep up without neglecting the price. What they achieved, were statements like this:

"We have to improve the parts that are inappropriate," said Samsung executive Lee Don-joo to a news agency in Korea. "Apple did very thin [the iPad 2]

The Galaxy-Tab has a cost of about $ 900 without a contract for two years with the operators, while the price of IPAD 2 starts from $ 499, with the most expensive model coming to U $ S 829. Samsung did not announce pricing details for the 10.1-inch tablet.

"The (tablet) of 10 inches would have a price higher than the (tablet) of 7 inches, but we have to rethink that idea," said Lee. As

or other companies fit the price and lose profit margin, or launch products at the prices stipulated and therefore risk a competition that would probably not go well. What you see is that Apple is again which defines the rules of the game, while other companies simply are consistent with these. So, not only a slim chance that 2011 is the year of the iPad 2.

iPad 3. 2012

Another rumor points to fill in doubt potential buyers of Apple's new tablet was one that indicated that the iPad two would be just a minor update of the iPad original, and in September This year Apple launched an iPad 3 with specifications that would leave behind the model by introducing this March 2. However, the presentation, Steve Jobs made it clear that 2011 was the year of the iPad 2, which indirectly assures us that the rumor is false and there are no plans to take a new tablet until next year.

However, we do know is that this year we will have new iPhone, and we can probably assume that it will be Apple's next move if we analyze what just happened with the new iPad: first, a competitive price is what makes an Apple product at an advantage over the competition. This means that the Cupertino are seeing the benefits of having a product with an affordable price, which added to Tim Cook said, easily could be an indication that in June there will be a cheaper version iPhone. Shortly before

declared intention that the iPhone is not "only for the rich" , Tim Cook talked about and said Google Android "not be like Windows" , since the situation was "not comparable" because the fragmentation of the Google OS, that is "not one" but "several."

However, Android is no stranger to the problem and is trying solution with an API that is used to adapt applications to different screen sizes and resolutions, as a first step in the process of solving the problem fragmentation you have. Therefore, Apple can not rely on the current diversification of Android and rest on the failure of others to excel. You must seize the moment of weakness and hit Google where it hurts: the midrange segment. Especially if, as said Tim Cook, plan "does not give any market."

As regards to the rumors, we can then see an iPhone 5 with the usual measures, which you could add an iPhone nano. Or an iPhone 5 with 4-inch screen and a cheaper iPhone with the same measures as usual. Speculation aside, one thing is certain: this year, Apple will be coming with everything.

Anniversary Wording In Spanish

Marathon Valentine's Day, February 20, 2011 The Florence Marathon

This Valentine's Day was just an opportunity not to be missed.
First of all, the "colleagues" Terni deserved attention only to geographical proximity: to whom we must then ask us to participate when we hold meetings?
And then, guys, hold a 42 km, do not say the first in Umbria, but certainly the first since the Sept. 11, is a fact in itself meritorious.
a complex machine of sponsors and volunteers are needed from the beginning, and certainly not a matter of days. A month commitment of volunteers, sponsors and fans.
And the result was the height of the commitment supplies on time, location carefully guarded against any "dangerous intersection" (And they were many), even at the cost dell'impopolarità Terni with some impatience, and a number of participants (about 400) which certainly promises a lot since the next edition.
all surrounded by the traditional warm welcome and Terni, complete with breakfast on departure and arrival of comfort food.

The race was held in great ease, it is not the best I remember but, paradoxically, my fastest. One of the hot wind of Ferentillo and away, the first 11 km flying down in front of the waterfall Marmore and, further down, the steelworks. It enters the city and soon, shortly after the station, are greeted the "half" to go onto the ramp. The group is now frayed and should be concentrated in solitude, in the west to the marattana Terni. Some 18 km of desert, in which voices in the distance occasionally break the silence that surrounds us. The 28th mile, dirt track and in the countryside, there afresh at the center, a rural supply most desirable. Soon resume marattana to return, and riarriviamo in the suburbs. Are now 38 family members malls keep us company, one after another, until the old town, and we had never realized how far it was! You enter the pedestrian zone, inflatable goal is before us leads us to the path left and then back to "fill" the last 200 meters.
's done, the beautiful steel-colored medallion awaits us.
What to add?
We hope to be there next year!
